Billericay v Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club The Midweek Veterans on Thu 24 Apr 2025 at 13-00
Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club Lost by 37 runs

Match report Our traditional season-opener at Billericay began well with a successful coin-flip, skipper Griff opting to bowl first on a wicket lightly tinged with green. The decision was rewarded with an early wicket as Alan Porter clipped the top of off stump with a delivery that nipped and bounced, removing opener Sood, Billericay 9 for 1 from 4 overs. From there, the home side knuckled down and batted carefully, hitting the occasional boundary and running very well between the wickets to tick the scoreboard along to 71 before Griff had opener Eddy well held in the gully by Chris Baker in the 18th over. Another fifty partnership followed, Melvin John holding a catch in the deep off Phil Bartlett to make it 125 for 3. Sixth bowler Arslan Ahmed eventually had no 3 Mehrotra caught at backward point by Richard Cory, 184 for 4, and Paul Marshall nicked behind for 0 in the same over. Only 16 runs were conceded in the last 3 overs as Alan Porter returned to have the dangerous Gary Brown stumped for 1. A run out by Alsan on the last ball saw the innings close at 200 for 7 in 40 overs, with only 12 extras leaked.

Chelmer needed a steady start to their reply, sadly that was not to be, as Cory was run out in the fifth over after a mix-up, 16 for 1. Mark Rynn was next to go, bowled for 8 in the eleventh over, as a pattern emerged with Chelmer unable to post any partnerships of note. Opener Melvin soldiered on as wickets fell around him, 67 for 3 in 17 overs, 91 for 4 in 25, finally falling for 54 at 117 for 5 after 30 overs, a leg problem hampering his normal quick running. The writing was on the wall with 84 needed from 10 overs and most of the gun batters back in the hutch. Griff and Graham Boxer battled on but found it hard to get the ball away. A late cameo from Phil Bartlett, 27 not out from 14 balls, gave the score some respectability, but it was too little too late as Chelmer ended on 163 for 7, losing by 37 runs. Nevertheless, it was an enjoyable afternoon of cricket, blowing away some winter cobwebs for the weeks ahead.
