Two Counties - Over 60's v Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club The Midweek Veterans on Thu 22 May 2025 at TBC
Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club Lost by 3 runs
Match report
Spare a thought for skipper and team selector Griff, despite sterling efforts left with only nine players to take on Two Counties at Copdock CC. A spare player generously provided by the opposition made a tenth man. Never mind, a blinding reaction catch in the gully on the second ball of the match cheered up bucket-hands Griff immensely, Chris Baker the bowler benefitting. Captain Griff went on to take two more stinging catches later in the game, one off his own bowling. After the early moment of brilliance, the batsmen dug in and played some good shots, both retiring after reaching 50 with their side in a strong position, around 100 for 1 at drinks (20 overs). Chelmer fought back after the break, slowing the run rate and taking regular wickets when it was harder to get the ball away against slower bowling, Strats returning figures of 8 overs, 1 maiden, 2 for 23 and Griff 8 overs, 2 maidens, 3 for 30. 188 for 8 at 40 overs represented a good bowling recovery on what looked a decent batting wicket.
So it proved after the rare luxury of a proper cricket tea, as openers Mark Stratton and Melvin John both retired untroubled with 50 shortly after drinks, leaving Chelmer well poised to win. Mark Rynn and Simon Cooper eased the total to 121 when disaster struck with three wickets falling on that score, leaving plenty to do for the last pair of recognised batsmen and the tail. Griff and Phil Bartlett unfortunately fell in quick succession after getting things roughly back on track, but the lower order found it harder to get the ball away and probably wasted a bit too much time getting themselves out to allow Strats and Melvin to resume their innings', which happened a few balls too late as Chelmer again fell agonisingly short in a run chase, this time losing by just three runs, 185 for 8 after 40 overs. Perhaps with eleven fielders it would have been a different story, we shall never know.
